Program Policies

CIS 791

PHD students are required to register CIS 791. PHD students supported by the department must register this course until the support is terminated. Part-time PHD students must register for at least 2 semesters.

Departmental Seminars

Each supported CS PhD student must attend at least 75% of the departmental seminars in each semester. Attending all departmental seminars is encouraged. A seminar attendance sheet is available in the seminars or from the department office. Results will be evaluated by the CS PHD program committee.

Financial Support Period for Ph.D. Students

"Student" here refers to a PHD student getting financial aid from the department. Details concerning the financial support can be found here.

Timetable:

End of First Year
Student must take all the qualifying exams
in order to get the next year's financial aid.

End of Second Year Student must pass all the qualifying exams,
have chosen an advisor and
have an approved dissertation topic
in order to get the next year's financial aid.

End of Third Year Student must pass the doctoral dissertation proposal
defense in order to get the next year's financial aid.

End of Fourth Year Student is expected to pass the doctoral dissertation
defense and graduate.

A student can receive teaching assistantship from the department for at most 4 years. He/she may still get financial aid from his/her advisor after the 4th year.

A CS PhD student is automatically dismissed from the CS PHD program if he/she fails to pass the qualifying exams on the second attempt.

Registration

To register for courses, every CS PhD student should contact Program Director, who will advise all CS PhD students in registering for courses that will help their research progress and dissertation writing.

Pre-Doctoral Research

A student is permitted to register for a maximum of six (6) credits of pre-doctoral dissertation research in order to prepare a proposal for his or her dissertation research. The proposal must be in writing and defended successfully to the dissertation committee before it is accepted.

Doctoral Dissertation

The dissertation committee is chaired by the student's advisor, the Computer Science tenured, tenure-track, or affiliated faculty member who supervised his/her research. The advisor makes a recommendation to the Director of the Doctoral Prgram in Computer Science, who appoints at least five (5) faculty members to serve on the committee, one of whom must be from outside the department and the majority of whom must be computer science tenure-track or tenured faculty members.

The dissertation proposal must be distributed and received by each of the committee members at least four (4) weeks prior to the oral defense. The oral defnese is open to the Department of Computer Science and, therefore must be announced to the faculty seven (7) days before it is held.

Master's Degree while in Ph.D. Program

Any Ph.D. student who has received a TA or RA support from the Computer Science Department is not eligible for transferring to the M.S. program in the department. Consequently, withdrawing from the Ph.D. program or disqualified from the Ph.D. program results in leaving the department without being awarded any degree.
