Registration
To
register for courses, every CS PhD student should contact
Program Director, who will advise all CS PhD
students in registering for courses that will help their research progress and
dissertation writing.
A student is permitted to register for a maximum of six (6) credits of pre-doctoral dissertation research in order to prepare a proposal for his or her dissertation research. The proposal must be in writing and defended successfully to the dissertation committee before it is accepted.
Doctoral Dissertation
The
dissertation committee is chaired by the student's advisor, the
Computer Science tenured, tenure-track, or affiliated faculty member
who supervised his/her research.
The advisor makes a recommendation to the Director of the Doctoral Prgram in
Computer Science, who appoints at least five (5) faculty
members to serve on the
committee, one of whom must be from outside the department
and the majority of whom must be
computer science tenure-track or tenured faculty members.
The dissertation proposal must be distributed and received by
each of the committee members at least
four (4) weeks prior to the oral defense.
The oral defnese is open to the Department of Computer Science and,
therefore must be announced to the faculty seven (7) days before it is held.
Master's Degree while in Ph.D. Program
Any Ph.D. student who has received a TA or RA support from
the Computer Science Department is not eligible
for transferring to the M.S. program in the
department. Consequently, withdrawing from the Ph.D. program or disqualified
from the Ph.D. program results in leaving the department without being
awarded any degree.
