CS 696 - Spring 2012 - Network Management & Security
The final exam is scheduled on May 7, 2012 (Monday) between 6:00 - 8:30pm in CKB 212.
The final exam covers the material starting with the "Crypto crash course" in Lecture 6 to (and including) Lecture 13 (it is basically the network security component of the course).
The exam will be closed books and closed notes.

Prerequisites
Familiarity with networking fundamentals is recommended. The instructor will review basic computer networking concepts in the first lectures.
Textbook
No textbook is required. The following material is recommended:
- for the network management part:
"Network Management, Principles and Practice", by M. Subramanian, Addison Wesley 2000 (ISBN 0201357429).
- for the network security part:
instructor's notes and slides, relevant research publications, and:
"Network Security: Private Communication in a Public World - 2nd ed.", by C. Kaufman, R. Perlman, Prentice Hall 2002 (ISBN 0130460192).
Description
The first part of the class focuses on network management systems to monitor and control complex network systems, with an emphasis on SNMP.
The second part of the class focuses on security in computer networks.
The course will cover the following (tentative) list of topics in network security:
- Authentication systems and key establishment
- Attacks and countermeasures
- Web security
- SSL, IPSec
- Firewalls
- Intrusion detection
- Wireless security
- Software security
- Malware propagation and containment
- Anonymity and privacy on the web

Extra credit will be given for active participation in discussions during the class.
The quizzes and exams are closed book and closed notes.
